Treatment for Varicose Veins
Treatment for varicose veins has been revolutionised in the last few years.
Traditional surgery is still performed and in the hands of Specialist Vascular Surgeons it is safe and effective. In some cases varicose vein surgery is the BEST option. Only a Specialist Vascular Surgeon can offer all the treatment options. Newer treatments have become available which do not require the use of hospitals, operating theatres or general anaesthetics. Using modern minimally invasive techniques most varicose veins can be treated through tiny incisions using catheters and wires and in the time it takes for lunch. Laser used to be the only alternative to traditional surgery. Now there are Radiofrequency heat coils, Mechanochemical (MOCA) catheters, and Bioglue delivery systems that all treat varicose veins with minimal pain and with minimal 'down-time'. For some types of varicose vein, and for thread veins or spider veins, treatment by injection of fluid or foam is most appropriate. These treatments are performed in the office environment with the use of an ultrasound scanner to guide the injection of the correct vein. |
